Nationally Recognised Port Operative Apprenticeship Qualification

Exciting announcement to start 2026

In July 2025, Global Shipping Services sought to explore local providers of Port Operative apprenticeship qualifications to deliver to its workforce. At the time, there were only three recognised providers listed on the Government apprenticeship database, with the closest provider being 169 miles away from the Humber.

Not having a local training provider for the largest Port Network in the Country for cargo posed a significant problem. A shortage of skills could have a national impact on goods coming in and out of the Country. Global Shipping Services raised this matter with local Members of Parliament and local Mayors.

Nationally recognised Port Operative
Apprenticeship Qualification

Martin Vickers MP (Immingham and Brigg) has helped raise awareness with respective external agencies and arms of Government.

Global Shipping Services, working in conjunction with the Grimsby Institute/TEC Partnership, has created a nationally recognised Port Operative apprenticeship qualification with the first cohort inducted in December 2025 for full roll out in January 2026.

For Global Shipping Services, Christopher Thirlwell (HSEQ Manager) said, “I am pleased we have been able to get this qualification in place alongside Grimsby Institute / TEC Partnership, and this provides apprenticeship opportunities for the next generation of port operatives. The Ports are a key part of the national infrastructure, and they also play a huge part within the local communities. Having competent, trained employees is vital to the safety and success of any business and investing in our people is at the heart of what we do. This apprenticeship gives an attractive career option for future generations. Finally, I d like to thank all those involved for their support”.

For Grimsby Institute / TEC Partnership, Katie Wheeldon - Chief Commercial Officer said, “We are incredibly proud to partner with Global Shipping on this vital initiative. The launch of the Level 2 Port Operative apprenticeship directly addresses the industry's recognised skills gap by nurturing the next generation of port professionals. This 12-month, workplace-based programme ensures that apprentices gain essential, hands-on experience and receive an
industry-recognised certification, directly contributing to the future growth and operational excellence of the local shipping sector."
