CURRENT VACANCY - PORT OPERATIVE APPRENTICE

Overview
Due to continued investment and development within the Company, Global Shipping Services is launching the Port and Shipping Apprentice programme 2024, seeking to recruit “Port Operative Apprentices”. The Company will offer a Safe and Healthy, inclusive environment where each Port Operative Apprentice can achieve their potential. Operating since 1989 the Company engages with innovative and challenging projects that will give a solid foundation for a future career within Port and Shipping.

Role description
These are exciting times, and the Company is aiming to successfully recruit a number of persons as Port Operative Apprentices. A Port Operative Apprentice will gain front-line operational experience in loading/unloading vessels, vehicles, cargo handling, plant operations, warehousing/storage, and complex operations. Port and Shipping experience is NOT essential as all training will be provided with full support from the Company and its external partners. The Port Operative Apprentice will be based at one of our three Ports on the Humber (Immingham, Hull and Goole) but will also gain knowledge and experience from all operations across the Humber.

The candidate must be flexible to cater for the changing demands of the Port and Shipping sector. As a guide, a normal working day ranges from 6 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday with weekends being on a as required basis.

The Company is looking for a passionate, enthusiastic person who is not afraid to challenge themselves and showcase their creative thinking.

The Company is asking for the Port Operative Apprentice to be available for a minimum of 1500 hours per year.

Benefits
The salary is Circa £20,000.
Overtime available.

Holidays include 20 days, 8 Bank Holidays and an additional day for Port Operative Apprentices birthday.

The Port Operative Apprentice programme is run for 2 years and upon successful completion, this leads to a transition into a promoted role of Multi Skilled Port Operative.

Training
The Port Operative Apprentice will have a designated Line Manager but also a mentor to assist them through the 2-year pathway while they undertake their continued professional development. Throughout the 2 year period, the Port Operative Apprentice will be expected to hit key milestones. A range of training courses will be provided but as a guide, this includes Port Operative foundation course, slinging/signalling, lifting operations, warehousing, plant/machinery, forklift truck, Health and Safety, Quality, and Environmental management.

MSPO training

All applicants applying for the role of MSPO must possess or be will to work towards the following qualifications:

  • Manual handling training.
  • Forklift truck qualified.
  • Tugmaster qualified.
  • A driving licence is also preferred for the role.

MSPO working conditions

The role of MSPO requires working in an outdoor environment in challenging and sometimes undesirable conditions. Applicants are expected to understand the nature of the role and seasonal challenges that accompany it.

The position of MSPO is a Humberside based role, therefore travel between Hull, Goole and Immingham is required (means of transportation are provided).
